Carol Hoffman, Sales Division Administrative Assistant

“Having the opportunity to take these classes and learn more about stamps has helped me in my current position to serve our members with the questions they sometimes have when they phone into the Sales Division.”

“I started at the American Philatelic Society right out of high school on June 18, 1979. I have been with the APS Sales Division ever since, although I’ve had many different duties over the 29 years of my career.

“My first job was in the Retirements section, rotating sales circuit books that had made many trips to different member-buyers out of circulation and back to their owners. From there, I went to New Sales Book Secretary. That’s the other end of the life cycle of a sales circuit book ? registering and receipting it when it arrives here, verifying and recording its contents for the security of buyer and seller alike, and getting it on its way in a fresh sales circuit to eager APS members awaiting it across the country.

“My next job was processing and sending retirement checks (it’s fun to send sellers the money from their sales!) and the job of circuit clerk, processing incoming multiple sales circuits. In 1995, when Tom Horn took over as Director of APS Sales, I was his secretary. The next opportunity I had was my current job of Administrative Assistant. I assist Tom with various functions of the Sales Division and also fill in with the Sales Division where and when I’m needed.

"Since taking that job, I have had the opportunity to take classes at our annual Summer Seminars and have also helped with the Washington/Franklins class taught by Dennis Gilson. Having the opportunity to take these classes and learn more about stamps has helped me in my current position to serve our members with the questions they sometimes have when they phone into the Sales Division. In addition, attending APS stamp shows over the past several years has let me meet many of the members with whom I have talked on the phone, and it is good to be able to put a face with a name.

“I was not a collector until a few years ago, when I decided to collect pigs on stamps. I have always liked pigs and was very surprised how many stamps issued have pigs on them. One of my other hobbies is cooking and baking, which my co-workers certainly seem to enjoy!

“I have been married to my husband Harvey for 28 years, and we have one son, Matthew, 27. Just recently, I introduced my six-year-old niece Emmalee to stamp collecting, which she seems to enjoy very much.”
