APS U.S. Stamps of Chris Calle Album

The American Philatelic Society is pleased to make available a free album of U.S. Stamps of Chris Calle in conjunction with StampShow 2008, coming August 14–17 to the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

The full color mini-album showcases United States stamps designed between 1984 and 1998 by the Connecticut stamp designer, himself the son of U.S. stamp designer Paul Calle. Created for free use in the public domain, the album is available as a pdf file that can be reviewed or downloaded.

The album is unusual in several respects, beginning with its illustrated biographical sketch of Calle that details his family background, artistic heritage, and professional experience. Calle has designed both United States and stamps for foreign entities as diverse as Sweden, Marshall Islands, and the United Nations. He also has an extensive background as the producer of well over 1,000 different cachets for first-day covers.

Of the three pages with spaces for Calle’s U.S. stamps, users can choose which of two versions of the final page they wish to print and use. One includes a space for the 29-cent Moon Landing 25th Anniversary stamp that Calle designed with his father in 1994. A second version of the same page also includes spaces for the $2.40 Moon Landing 20th Anniversary stamp Calle designed in 1989, and the $9.95 Express Mail-rate Moon Landing 25th Anniversary stamp by Chris and Paul Calle that also was issued in 1994. Since these two high-value stamps alone are valued at $24.75 unused and $18.00 used in the current Scott catalogue, it was felt they might deter younger collectors. The remaining 30 stamps in the mini-album currently are catalogued at $21.75 mint and just $7.25 in used condition.

Also included are two additional pages. One has Calle’s photo with space for an autograph as well as room for other Calle stamps and covers. Chris will be available at the American Philatelic Society booth during much of StampShow in Hartford. The second page is blank, but has a heading for Calle’s latest stamps: a pane of 15 Portraits of the Wild West commemoratives to be issued by Marshall Islands on the morning of August 14, the first day of the show. There is a final page as well, with information about the APS, its Reference Collection, and the Young Stamp Collectors of America.

Collectors can download the pdf file for all of the nine pages in the U.S. Stamps of Chris Calle album, and then decide at their leisure which pages they wish to print for their own collections.

Chris and Paul Calle are among the 16 stamp designers with Connecticut connections noted in another APS album for Stamps of Connecticut. This 18-page album is still available online.
