Lewis
and Clark's America: The Price of Writing Home In
the early 1800s as the expedition prepared to explore the unmapped
territory west of the Mississippi River, letters would
have been carried by a person traveling on foot, by horse,
wagon, or boat. Learn more about how the Corps members would
have communicated and what it would cost to send a letter in
the 1800s. Includes a postage rate chart -- available in pdf
format.
Folding
Letters The art of folding
letters illustrates a variety of ways mail was manipulated
and sealed. Under
construction -- please check back later.
Writing
in Code: Thomas Jefferson and Meriwether Lewis When
the plans were laid for the exploration of lands beyond
the Mississippi River, even Congress was not fully informed
about Lewis and Clark's mission. British and Spanish
spies still hoped to claim rights to the lands where the
Corps
of Discovery planned to explore. To keep the Corps progress
secret, President Jefferson devised a code for
Captain Lewis' correspondence. Enjoy the Writing
in Code activity.
