Resources in Your Area

  • Family and friends that are also collectors are going to be your best resource. If you know someone that collects stamps, like your parents or grandparents, you have a head start. There's no better way to spend time with your family and learn about something you both enjoy. They were once beginners just like you, so they will be able to share what they have already learned.

  • Your local library is a good place to start. The hobbies/recreation section of your library may have basic books about stamp collecting, and the reference department may have a set of stamp catalogues. Also, check the newspaper/magazine section where you may find various hobby publications including Linn's Stamp News, Stamp Collector, Scott Stamp Monthly, Mekeel's and Stamps Magazine, and Global Stamp News. These publications include all sorts of helpful information about what's new in the hobby and provide dealer advertisements where you may be able to get some stamp packets at good prices.

  • A Stamp Dealer or Local Club in your area may be able to provide some hands-on help. Most collectors are more than willing to help others get started in the hobby and share their knowledge. To find a local stamp dealer or club, you can look in the yellow pages of your telephone book under the subject heading "Stamps for Collectors" or we welcome you to visit our on-line Dealer Directory and Local Club listings where you can search on an area near you. Even if you are not looking to join a club, it could still be beneficial for you to contact them as they could be a great resource of information and guidance to get you started! Some clubs even offer mentor programs.

  • Your Local Post Office is another great resource. Most post offices carry free publications and handouts for beginner collectors. They may also be able to tell you of other collectors and clubs in your area that you may be able to contact.
