Some
recent donations illustrate several giving options.
These
include:
Cash
- World Columbian
Stamp Expo added to the over $80,000 they have previously donated
to the Society and Library with another $2,000 donation for the
Building Fund. This is especially helpful as the Society moves
forward in addressing the future space needs for both the Society
and Library.
- Irwin Weinberg
of Weinberg Philatelic Rarities donated $1,000 in honor of his
late wife Jean to support the All Star Stamp Club program which
serves nearly 2,000 youth in school-age clubs. Several other members
continued their generosity by giving more than $1,000 each to
the Society's John K. Tiffany Endowment Fund for the future of
philately.
- The Crescent
City Stamp Club of New Orleans raised money at an auction during
its annual "Happening" which has been used to benefit
the American Philatelic Research Library. The American First Day
Cover Society, whose archives are housed in the APRL has also
been a regular donor to the Library.
Memorials
- Purchasing
a brick for the Society's paver
garden has proven to be a popular way to memorialize loved
ones. The South Miami Stamp Club recently honored one of its members
in this way. Other members have honored friends and relatives
with one of these permanent memorials.
Pledges
- Some members
would like to show more support for the Society than they feel
they can immediately provide. The Society understands this and
welcomes pledges to be paid over a number of years which help
generate a predictable level of future income (a pledge card in
.pdf format is available, otherwise
you may request one at tiffany@stamps.org).
Other members regularly make their contributions go further by
arranging for their employers to match a significant annual contribution.
Life
Insurance
- A member
in Oregon decided on a different approach. He decided to take
out a life insurance policy on himself with the Society as the
beneficiary. This allows him to fully deduct his annual premium
payment and will eventually provide the Society with $100,000
for its work.
Bequests
- Another
method of support that requires no immediate outlay of resources
is to include the Society in your will. At least ten members have
indicated that they have included the Society or Library in their
estates.
Stock
- Another
approach that may be appropriate for many individuals is a gift
of stock. IRS rules usually allow donors to deduct the full current
market value. At the same time the donor may save hundreds or
thousands of dollars in capital gains taxes that would have come
due if they directly sold the appreciated stock.
In-Kind
- Donations
do not have to be cash or stock. The Society relies on donations
of philatelic material to support the All Star Stamp Club Program,
to supply materials for youth areas at stamp shows, and to enhance
the Reference Collection. A member in California recently donated
a painting of a stamp collector which now hangs near the Society's
Reference Collection. In addition to stamps, past in-kind donations
include a Rosback perforating machine, a hand-operated printing
press and a voltage regulator for the headquarters building.

Non-Cash/Planned Giving brochure
provides additional information and options.
No matter
the amount, all donations help the Society keep its dues to a
modest level (currently $45.00 per year) and allow for a greater
number of services. Both the Society and Library have non-profit
tax exempt status under IRS Section 501c(3) permitting most donations
to be deductible to the greatest extent permitted by law.
